Things to be Grateful for

things to be grateful for gratitude

A wise man once said that “the secret of happiness is to count your blessings while others are adding up their troubles.” But sometimes it is all too easy to forget the things that we are grateful for. When we're having a bad day, it seems to be a fact of human nature that we push our positive memories and feelings of gratitude aside and focus on the things we're less happy with. However, as a new season is very nearly upon us, today I am encouraging you to come on a spring awakening with me, bringing all the good things in our lives to the fore. I'm a big believer in the law of attraction, namely that if you focus on the positive, you can bring more happiness and light into your life. Sure, this isn't an easy fix for every problem that you experience but hey, a few positive thoughts never hurt anyone! By being more grateful for what I already have, I hope to manifest more things worthy of being appreciated in my life. So, here is a post about just a few things that I'm grateful for.

The people in my life

I'm very lucky to have been blessed with some wonderful family and friends. Sure, my family may drive each other up the wall occasionally (yes little brother, I'm talking about you) but when it comes down to it, there's nothing we wouldn't do for each other. My parents have been a constant source of support for me throughout my entire life and I wouldn't be where I am today without them. My sister is a remarkable young woman with so much strength and sass, I'm proud to call her my friend as well as my sister. I'm also very proud of my brother - his dirty jokes and annoying habits can be a bit of a pain but he is also kind, intelligent, and responsible. But don't tell him I said that. My dogs are also a massive part of our family and they mean the world to me. They never fail to be excited to see me when I come home and they bring me so much joy!

As for friends, I'm also very lucky in this department. I've met some amazing people through university, blogging and other avenues. I went through a few years of adolescence where I didn't have that many friends. I didn't feel that I had any mates in my life who really understood me, but now my time of growing up with fewer friends makes me all the more grateful for having found "my people". I have now found true friendship and not a day goes by that I'm not thankful for having those people around. (Awwww, I'm much too soppy, right?!)

Small, inexpensive pleasures

Breathing in the fresh air, taking a walk across the fields, feeling the warm spring sunshine on your face. All of these things bring me such happiness, especially given the fact that last winter seemed to last about 500 years. Sure, life's luxuries really can make a difference, but more often than not it's the little things like this that really matter. What really makes my world go round? A smile from a stranger, a good hair day, a beautiful sunrise or even just eating my favourite chocolate bar. Those small things truly are deserving of gratitude and appreciation.

Learning

I love to learn. Nothing brings me greater pleasure or happiness than discovering something new or working out an answer to a problem. I love my university based education but even doing research for blog articles, such as my recent post on Leicester's historic haunts, is a valuable learning experience. I'm grateful that I'm able to read new books, write down my thoughts, and that I have various platforms through which to share what I know with the world. I'm very lucky to have grown up in a place where I have been able to embark on an education and find satisfaction and fulfilment in learning. It's something that I often take for granted and I really should be even more grateful.

Opportunities

Life really can throw some amazing opportunities your way. Whether they come about through sheer hard work and determination or simply luck, they are all worth appreciating. The right opportunity can change your life in an instant; the smallest chance event can turn into your biggest passion. Blogging alone has been the architect of so many opportunites for me, through the friends that I've made and the experiences that it has given me. I'm especially grateful for all of the travels and events I've been able to attend; Ladies Day at Cheltenham and Tea with a Tiger are just two of the many standout memories for me. These are activities that I'd never have picked for myself to do otherwise but thanks to the opportunities presented by blogging, I was able to make the most of these experiences and have an amazing time. That's something I'll never cease to be thankful for.

Having a voice

I have a voice which I can use to speak up for what I believe in. I have the power to use this voice to benefit my life and the lives of others. I have the ability through this voice to change the world, even if it's just in a small way. This voice makes me who I am today. If that's not something worthy of being grateful for, I don't know what is. What makes me even more thankful to have a voice and the power to decide my life's destiny is the fact that so many other people in the world lack exactly this. After all, just because many people don't have to question their right to use their voice doesn't mean that this is the case for everyone. This is why I believe that gratitude in this case should also come with a sense of determination to elevate the voices of others whose voices need to be listened to in order to create a fairer world.
