Celebrating My 25th: How to Make a Lockdown Birthday Special #AD

THIS POST FEATURES GIFTED ITEMS FROM FEMME LUXE FINERY
When I imagined myself turning 25, celebrating during a global pandemic wasn't exactly what I had in mind. While I'm definitely not a party animal, I had hoped to head out for a meal and enjoy a cocktail or two. But with coronavirus still dominating everyone's thoughts and the government's advice to stay at home firmly in place, my birthday plans understandably had undergo some revisions. Determined to still have a lovely day of celebrations, my mum, sister and I put our thinking caps on and planned a birthday afternoon tea extravaganza at home! Since we couldn't go to a restaurant, we brought the restaurant to us! Here's exactly how we pulled it off...

What We Baked

Lemon and Poppyseed Muffins

It wouldn't be afternoon tea without a shedload of cake! My mum, sister and I each decided to bake one element of the afternoon tea each and I chose lemon and poppyseed muffins. I'd never baked them before, so it was a bit of an adventure! I found a recipe on the Creme De La Crumb blog and it was very easy to whip up. Unless you're cooking for a small army, however, I would recommend halving the amounts recommended in the recipe. I made the full batch and ended up with two and a half trays of muffins! We popped some into the freezer to enjoy another time. The muffins were full of delicious lemony flavour and I was impressed with them.

Red Velvet Cake

My sister's bake was definitely the pièce de résistance of our afternoon tea! She made my birthday cake, which was an amazing red velvet cake taken from the Sally's Baking Addiction blog. My sister worked really hard on the cake, baking it the day before so that it had plenty of time to cool before it was smothered in soft cream cheese icing. Even my brother, who isn't the biggest lover of cake, thought that it was utterly delicious. It was light, fluffy, perfectly moist and (most importantly) it looked great with the olbigatory birthday candles on top!

Kitchen 'Fits

While beavering away in the kitchen, my sister and I donned our comfiest loungewear co-ords from Femme Luxe Finery. We decided to wear our matching Destiny long sleeve loungewear sets, mine in the colour camel and my sister's in grey. We both really loved the trousers that came with this set. The cuffs around the ankles and the raised seam down the front of the leg makes them look rather smart, so much so that we both decided that we'd wear them out of the house as regular trousers once lockdown is over! The crew neck tops are really comfy and versatile - we can easily mix and match them with other pairs of trousers. Loungewear is ideal for doing more active jobs around the house such as baking as well as vegging out on the sofa. Both sets got a big thumbs up from us!

How We Made It Special

Decorations

Baking complete, it was time for the finishing touches! I'm a firm believer that you're never too old for some good old fashioned party decorations! We took over a corner of the dining room and my mum put up a birthday banner in my honour, as well as stringing a few helium balloons to my chair. I also displayed the lovely cards that I was sent on the windowsill as well as my beautiful bouquet of yellow roses.

Table Setting

My Mum also went all out with the table setting. We used her very sweet Cath Kidston inspired pink teacups and she'd also invested in a cute vintage-inspired tablecloth and dinky paper plates. Our slightly wonky afternoon tea stand was dusted off and it looked fantastic when piled high with sandwiches, cake and my mum's home baked scones. We even printed out a menu for the afternoon tea which we designed for free on Canva. When tied up with a ribbon, it looked adorable on the table! Little touches like this really made it feel so special.

Taking Inspiration from a Glamorous Source

When my sister turned 22 last year, my mum treated her to an afternoon tea at the incredible Ritz hotel in London! As that treat wasn't a possibility for my birthday, we shamelessly used the iconic hotel as inspiration and replicated their amazing sandwich fillings at home! On their visit, my mum and sister sampled traditional egg and cress sarnies as well as cream cheese, cucumber and dill, followed by a vegan option of red pepper, olive and houmous. Our at-home varieties were still delicious and the inspiration taken from the Ritz added an extra bit of glamour to the day!

Getting dressed up

Speaking of glamour, even though we didn't leave the house on my birthday we all decided to get properly dressed up for the occasion! I must say, it was nice to get out of joggers and t-shirts for a while! Femme Luxe Finery have so many lovely party dresses on their site and after much deliberation, I chose their Ruched Midi Bodycon Dress in wine. I absolutely loved the colour and how beautifully the material lay across my chest. The ruching along the sides was very flattering and didn't cling too much even when I was stuffed with afternoon tea! I would recommend sizing down if you get this dress for yourself as my regular size 10 was a little too big for me, but I cinched in the waist with a belt which fixed the look for me. My sister looked gorgeous in her One Shoulder Ruched Slinky Midi Dress in emerald. The colour complemented her lovely brown hair and the calf length really suited her. We both liked how thick the material of both of our dresses was - no danger of revealing your knickers through the fabric when bending over!

I had a truly wonderful birthday and have to say a big thanks to my mum and sister for making it a great occasion, as well as to all of the lovely people who sent me cards, gifts and warm wishes from afar. Have you been commemorating any special occasions during lockdown? How did you celebrate?
